Double Entry Journal # 8

1. What is the main challenge being addressed?
The main challenge being addressed in this reading is finding an instructional strategy that will address each students learning style.

2. What does the author mean by the phrase "way with words?"
I believe this phrase means that there are several ways to learning. There are many new approaches that teachers should be sure they are addressing. It is essential to branch out from the traditional classroom based learning.

3. What is the core argument being made by the author of this book?
Most educators believe that teaching students to read, and learning to read is the hardest part of schooling. When in fact, the real issue is that students get frustrated with the vocabulary, wording, and language that is tacked onto different content areas. (math, science, social studies) It's the way with words that the students do not like. Sometimes simplicity is essential.

4. Give an example of a specialized variety of a language or "way with words" you have learned outside of school.
Throughout elementary, middle, and high school I was a cheerleader. There is a lot of vocabulary and wording that people would not understand unless they were associated with this subject in some way.

5. According to the author, how do people learn a specialized variety of a language or "way with words" best?
The author believes that people need to personally be ready to learn a new specialized variety of language. They should be willing to think out side of the typical school setting and attach learning experiences to their everyday lives. Making connections helps people learn.

6. If people are to be successful in the 21st century, what must they become?
In order for people to become successful in the 21st century, they must become "shape-shifting portfolio people." They must be willing and capable of adapting to different situations.

7. The author states that learning academic language is NOT sufficient for success in modern society. Do you agree? Why or why not?
I do agree with this. As I stated in question 5, making connections helps people learn. This is why scaffolding is highly enforced in the school system. As humans, we build and grow off of prior knowledge. Our everyday experiences help us learn, grow, and improve. It is important for us to attach our outside lives to what we do in school.

8. What do you think about this author's "way with words?"
It is evident that the author is highly educated. He wrote in a sophisticated manner, however, his wording was easy to understand.
